My story…

“Bruises is a song about being stuck in toxic relationships and breaking cycles that are not serving. It’s written during one of the most challenging times of my life, where I had to find strength and rebuild my self-confidence after hitting rock bottom. I hope my songs and stories will inspire others to find light in the darkness.”

Pernille Karlsen is a singer-songwriter, artist and coach from Hadsund, Denmark. After an unexpected lockdown and burnout alone in Costa Rica, she was forced to prioritize her health. She bought a ukulele and embarked on a healing journey that brought her to discover her voice, alchemize emotions into songs and compose enough music for multiple albums. She has returned to her country with a survival story to uplift and inspire anyone going through a difficult time.
Penny’s music is raw and authentic, giving people permission to open their hearts and feel deeply.
“Art is like life — a process, it’s our most natural expression not meant to be polished or framed, it’s been inside of us since we were born, waiting to be embodied, to make us feel alive and remind those who are stuck that there’s a way out of the darkness.”
— Penny
Penny lives her life by design, inspiring others to create their dream reality. She believes in the healing power of self expression, guiding others to live a heart-centered life in flow, while empowering them to confidently share their authentic voice with the world.
Danish born Pernille Karlsen holds a BFA in graphic design from SUNY Purchase College and a MA in sustainability and communication design from Designschool Kolding. After spending her adult life chasing the American Dream, a fatal car accident awakened her spiritually while pushing her to seek alternative healing modalities. In 2019 she discovered the holistic path, becoming a certified yoga teacher, Ayurvedic consultant, Reiki master and Spiritual Life Coach. In February of 2020, she traveled to Costa Rica to do her Masters project, but was unexpectedly faced with a pandemic lockdown, burnout, failed exam and a dark night of the soul. She stepped away from the screen dedicating time for healing, connecting with her emotions through meditation, music and writing.
After healing and discovering her voice, she reframed the thesis to address toxic perfectionism and inner communication, how the stories we tell ourselves become reality and why it is crucial to have a loving relationship with oneself. Using design methods, she became her own social experiment, creating a new identity as a musician — going from singing in the shower and strumming 4-chord songs, to booking gigs as a singer-songwriter and releasing music as an independent artist.
For 10 years I was “just” a designer. I never considered myself creative, nor did I identify as an artist.
I rarely left my box and would design solely based on trends and other ways that seemed accepted by society and design education. But the most interesting problem I faced was being stranded in the jungle during Covid, having to reinvent my life. I quickly learned that design thinking could help me reframe limiting beliefs and change the way I communicate with myself. By rewriting the stories that were replaying in my mind, I was able to overcome some of my biggest fears. I am here to help guide you home to yourself. To embody your greatness and not seek validation from external factors. Instead of waiting for problems to be solved, be the writer of your story, enjoy the process, prototype versions of yourself and create the reality you desire. The world is your canvas and you’re the only one who can make it colorful from your perspective.

Letting Go
Why are we so scared
of falling in love again
even if it could be
a different ending
is this the end
or the beginning
the beginning of
you and me
The Reason
There’s a reason for this change
Could it be that we’ll embrace
What it means to be a human after all
You are not strange or insane
We are all one and the same
Realize that humans mess up
And they fall
To the Moon
I might be slightly crazy,
And also a dreamer
but just like Lennon said
He wasn’t the only one
And even if I’m crazy
At least I am human
I’m not afraid of failing
So judge me if you care
